Get up early-
When you get up early, you feel like you’re ahead of the world. It’s a small win that has set you on the right path for the rest of your day. There are also a few advantages for starting what you need to early in the day. The first is, not many people are going to bug you and suck your time away from what you want to do. Things come up or time gets away from you. Right now it’s summer, it gets hot and it becomes so much harder to work out or run when the sun is throwing itself at you. Wake up earliest as possible, as long as you get your 7 hours of sleep you’ll be okay. I love to sleep in and I would everyday if I could, but when I wake up at 6am or earlier I feel like I can do a lot more in my day.
Plan tomorrow-
One way to help ensure you achieve what you want is to plan what you want to do the day before. There are many possible physiological reasons why this works, I just know it makes it easier for you by removing obstacles. You have to choose what to wear, you have to choose what to eat, you have to decide on where you’re going to run and how far. Make things as easy as you can, do what you can the night before. Lay out your clothes you’ll want to wear, put out breakfast pantry items on your countertop, make a plan for your run. Anything that will make it easier for the next morning, even if it’s just small things. Planning shouldn’t be overwhelming. If it is, you’re probably taking on too much at once. Part of your next day’s plan should just be taking baby steps. I often find that if I set the bar low, I’ll easily reach my goal, then do more than expected. I’ll be more likely to have achieved my goal and less likely to beat myself up over it.
Accountability-
It’s okay to show weakness or ask for help or even ask someone to help you be accountable. It’s hard, but it’s what will set you apart so you can get where you need to. Asking someone to help you is the best way. You can send your miles to them every week or anything else you’d like to do. I made myself be accountable through my wallet. I’m a poor college student so every dollar matters. I knew when I signed up for my first marathon that I had to run it no matter what. So might as well start training for it so I don’t embarrass myself too much. Sometimes I have the hardest time getting up in the morning. I tell my wife that I’m setting my alarm on my phone and another alarm in the kitchen that will go off one minute after my phone if I don’t get to it quick enough. If I try to get back into bed she’ll kick me out of the room, as per her instructions to do so. Again, it’s hard, but if you have someone or something on your side, it’ll help.
