Most people should try to be a runner at least once in their life. I’ve considered myself a runner a couple times in my life, last summer and this summer. I run, therefore I’m a runner right now. Biking, swimming, rock climbing, about all sports, involve other people or/and expensive equipment. All you need for a good run is a pair of athletic shoes and a little bit of space, most people have these.
I feel like there are few athletic activities where people can push through their perceived limits the way running allows. There’s something special about running verses many other athletic hobbies. Weightlifting for most people involves pushing yourself for at the most an hour and then leaving the gym. You give everything you got, to do the most you can in that period of time, being there for longer wont do you any good, you’ve already done everything you can. When you’re running your body is at times screaming at you to stop or at least slow down. Usually, if you just keep going, you’ll be just fine. Pushing past your limits and doing more than you thought you ever could is one of the best feelings. I believe it also has some spectacular benefits. It gives you a new paradigm on what is possible, showing yourself how you have much more potential than you might think you have.
Running is filled with personal victories. The only person you’re trying to beat is yourself. In other sports you might need a team or someone to measure your efforts. Yes there are races, but for the average begininner, you’re only going to be racing against yourself. You’re only going to be attempting to cross the finish line or get a new PR.
One of the best parts about running is the community of instant support you get. Walk into any running shop or visit any forum about running and you’ll usually be met with tons of kindness. Many races you run will have tons of strangers cheering you on. You don’t have to be fast or fit or in shape, people will genuinely be happy for you for doing what you can.
